The First 14 Days
The coating continues to cure after your vehicle is returned to you. Extra care during this period is important.
First 24 Hours
Where possible:
- Keep the vehicle dry.
- Avoid rain, sprinklers and unnecessary water exposure.
- Avoid touching or wiping the paint unnecessarily.
If the vehicle becomes wet during this period, do not aggressively wipe or scrub the surface. Contact Haviland Reflections if you are unsure what to do.
First 14 Days
During the first two weekweeks:
- Do not wash the vehicle with chemicals or shampoo.
- Do not use waxes, polishes, sealants or detailing sprays.
- Remove bird droppings, insects and other aggressive contamination as soon as safely possible. (Contact Haviland Reflections for advice.)
- Avoid allowing hard water or sprinkler water to dry on the paint.

How to Wash a Ceramic Coated Vehicle
Correct washing is one of the most important factors in maintaining both the coating and the appearance of your paintwork.
Ceramic coatings reduce how strongly contamination bonds to the surface, but poor washing techniques can still create swirl marks and wash marring.
1. Wash in the Shade
Always work on cool paintwork and avoid washing in direct sunlight wherever possible.
Hot panels can cause chemicals and water to dry prematurely, increasing the risk of spotting and staining.
2. Thoroughly Rinse the Vehicle
Use a pressure washer or strong stream of water to remove as much loose dirt as possible before touching the paint.
For heavily contaminated vehicles, a suitable pre-wash or snow foam can be used before the contact wash.
3. Use a Quality pH-Neutral Shampoo
Use a coating-safe automotive shampoo with good lubrication.
Avoid household detergents and unnecessarily aggressive cleaners.
4. Use a Clean Wash Mitt
Use a high-quality microfiber or dedicated wash mitt rather than a sponge.
Work from the cleaner upper sections of the vehicle toward the dirtier lower sections.

5. Clean Wheels Separately
Use separate wash tools for wheels, tyres and paintwork.
Brake dust and road contamination collected from wheels should never be transferred onto your painted surfaces.
6. Rinse Thoroughly
Completely rinse away remaining shampoo and loosened contamination.
A healthy ceramic coating should allow water to sheet or bead strongly from the surface.
7. Dry the Vehicle
Do not simply allow the vehicle to air dry.
Use a clean, soft microfiber drying towel or automotive air blower.
Drying the vehicle properly is particularly important in areas with hard or mineral-rich water, as water left to evaporate can create mineral deposits and water spotting.
What to Avoid
To maintain the appearance of your vehicle and maximise the life of the coating, we recommend avoiding:
- Automatic car washes
- Dirty wash mitts, sponges or drying towels
- Household detergents
- Harsh degreasers on painted surfaces
- Unnecessary acidic or highly alkaline chemicals

- Do not allow wash water to air dry.
- Dry the vehicle after washing.
- Remove fresh water spots early.
- Avoid allowing mineral deposits to repeatedly bake onto hot paintwork.

Maintaining Hydrophobic Performance
Over time, road film, mineral contamination, iron particles, oils and other environmental contamination can accumulate on top of a ceramic coating.
This can make a healthy coating appear to have lost some of its water behaviour.
Reduced beading does not automatically mean the coating has failed.
In many cases, a professional chemical decontamination process can restore the coating's surface behaviour without the need for polishing.

If bonded contamination remains after chemical treatment, the safest next step can be determined based on the condition of the vehicle.
Can My Ceramic Coating Still Scratch?
Yes.
Ceramic coatings provide chemical resistance, environmental protection, gloss and easier maintenance, but they do not make paint scratch-proof.
Swirl marks can still be created through:
- Poor washing techniques

- Automatic brush washes
- Dry wiping dusty paintwork
- Aggressive drying

Can I Polish a Ceramic Coated Vehicle?

What Happens if a Panel is Repainted?
